Fort Clark, a U.S. Military fort, was established in 1852 at Las Moras Springs by the First Infantry and U.S. Mounted Rifles. It served as a stop on the Comanche War Trail into Mexico and later as a supply depot and hospital for Confederate troops and civilians. The Fort was also home to the Seminole-Negro Indian Scouts, who served there from 1872 until 1914. During the Mexican Revolution, the fort was garrisoned by the Third Texas Infantry. During World War II, the fort was manned by the 112th Cavalry and later by the second Cavalry Division. The fort closed in 1944 due to the mechanization of horse cavalry, but it remains a significant part of the U.S. military history.
